 On my diploma course earlier this year, myself and the delegates were laughing and joking about how back in the 80s and 90s in English pubs, peanuts and other bar snacks were pinned up on a cardboard promotional holder hat had a picture of a scantily clad woman on the back and as more bags of peanuts were bought, more of the lady behind them appeared.... How funny and kitsch. Youll see why I mention this later on...
I can remember when I lived and studied in Finland when I was younger and I would walk in to University and say hi to the other students on my course and so very often they were fed up with the long winter, the lack of sunlight and would all seem so apathetic and lethargic.
Apathy is probably the polite way of referring to what some people might label as laziness and it describes a feeling most of us struggle with at one time or the other. Suppose you desire to do something that you know you need to do but presently you do not wish to do. And even though you need to do it, or you feel you must do it, because you dont enjoy doing it, you prevent yourself from doing this particular thing.
We then feel like we are being lazy, we then maybe even feel guilty because we know we should be doing something else and a vicious cycle ensues. You know what I mean, don't you?
Often, it becomes easier to not do something that you know you really should be doing, especially when we have feelings of laziness, apathy, or lethargy or just the common blues....
So with this individual hypnosis session, I share with you a great way to start getting yourself going again and giving yourself a good old fashioned shot in the arm using your brain.
Within the field of NLP, Richard Bandler developed what was known as a submodality change pattern that he calls the Godiva Chocolate Pattern that helps you change your feelings from apathy to desire.
Why did I mention the old school English pubs with their peanuts? because the idea was to encourage people to peel away the peanuts, thus spending money buying the peanuts, and stoking the desire and motivation to reveal the picture of the lady behind the peanuts.
Within this session, we peel away the barriers in your mind, helping you to see the desired outcome, and we install lots of desire and motivation so that when the session finishes, you are filled with drive, passion and motivation and laziness is a thing of the past.

 I had a week long holiday just prior to putting this session together. The sun shone on the part of Cornwall I was in! The apartment we stayed in was neighbours with Peirce Brosnan and had a panoramic view of the harbour, it was bliss to just sit and watch the world going by.
We sailed, visited places of great beauty, ate much, drank much and laughed heartily. A very much needed and thoroughly enjoyed period of time with my wife.
I have been writing about it on my blog this week... Some of the Cornish people seem to have this wonderful knack of being happy. That is, the life they lead seems to fulfil them... As Richard Bandler once said in not so many words, they really do seem to want the things they have got in this life.
With this hypnosis session, I am sharing with you a process designed to create more deep-rooted self-acceptance. Self-acceptance tends to be easier when it is experienced through multiple perspectives and through a variety of your senses...
Which is why I write about this shortly after having experienced the truly magnificence of the Lost Gardens of Heligan, some stunning creeks off local rivers, the awe of the Eden project, the natural beauty of the coastline at Lizard Point and so much more whilst in Cornwall... The sounds, the glorious sights, the flavours of the local produce and delicacies, the feelings stirred and shared while all this occurred... Really did enable me to let go of an unwanted existing mindset, experience myself afresh and accept myself truly in a wonderful way again.
When I first set out in the world of therapy and personal development, I was advised by a good friend and mentor that I should consider reading the autobiographies and biographies of the people that inspired me... Or people that I wanted to aspire to be like in some way... He said it was the closest thing to being coached personally and learning about these people... In the field of modern psychology, it is perhaps considered to be raw material for modelling aspects of these people.
So I read several autobiographies and still do so... My favourites include Brian Clough, the football manager of my beloved Nottingham Forest when we won two European Cups in successive seasons. Paula Radcliffe, the marathon world record holder, Richard Branson the entrepreneur, Martin Luther King, Ghandi, John Lydon (Jonny Rotten of Sex pistols fame), Iggy Pop, Milton Erickson, Stuart Pearce (my favourite footballer of all time) and so on and so on.
I know it is one of those interesting topics of conversation at dinner parties where we sometimes discuss what our own autobiography might be like, it is even a question I sometimes ask my own clients when they are looking for resources from their life... What would your autobiography be like? What chapters would be easy and enjoyable, what would you be proud of, what stands out most prominently, what would be challenging?
It makes for some interesting thoughts, does it not?
With this session, I am using a technique first championed, designed and utilised by a lady called Leslie Cameron Bandler and have put my own spin into it. It is designed to help advance your self-acceptance and uses the notion of autobiography to great effect.
Imagine if you had access to your unconscious mind, and within the depths of your mind, you had access to the book of your life. The book that tells the story of your life, past, present and future... This session empowers you to go deeply into the book of your unconscious mind, to make profound changes in it and to get it spreading deep levels of joy and self-acceptance throughout your mind and body. it is remarked upon as being an incredibly profound session. At least, it certainly was for me and for many of my clients when they experience this.

 When I was young, one of my best friends at school, a very close friend of mine got caught smoking. This was a cardinal sin. As a means to put an end to this flirting with the tobacco weed, his Dad sat him down and handed him a packet of 20 cigarettes.
Puzzled, my friend was not sure what to do... His Dad instructed him to open the packet. He then handed him a lighter and told him to smoke a cigarette - which he did. They chatted and my friend thought it was great that his Dad had accepted him as a smoker and that he had understood.
As he stubbed out the cigarette and thought this chat was coming to an end. His Dad instructed him to light up another one straight away.... Uh-oh.
He then had to smoke the entire packet, every single cigarette, back to back, until he was green at the gills, coughing, wheezing, and eventually throwing up...
His Dad hoped that this would deter him from ever smoking again.
I bet you know someone with a similar story, don't you?
Ever meet a drug addict that had a traumatic overdose? There is a similar belief that this somehow scares and educates the mind not do that behaviour again...
I once listened to a music track so much that I ended up transforming my utter love for this song into getting totally bored of it... I mean, it got to the stage where it did not excite me and did not offer up any stimulus anymore... And that is just what we do want!
Let me explain...
I would like to ask you a relatively simple question... many people have compulsive behaviours that they would like to change, especially certain habits that are compulsive... So answer me this, which of the following are compulsive behaviours:
- Someone who smokes 30 cigarettes a day and has done for 40 years. - Someone who smokes a pack of 10 only at weekends when they go out drinking with friends, has done so for a couple of years. - Someone who eats 5 bags of crisps in front of the TV every night. - Someone who eats one chocolate bar at 3pm every afternoon.
... I know that you know the answer here... They are all compulsive behaviours. In psychiatry a compulsion is defined as a drive that causes a person to perform actions, often of a trivial nature and repetitive nature, against his or her will.
Do you have any such compulsions? I bet if you thought about the patterns involved in your daily life you'd notice that you have many. Of course for most of us, our compulsions are fairly non-threatening and innocuous, however some people harbour compulsions that cause problems and they really need to be stopped.
Yet attempting to stop such compulsions can cause us discomfort and so we just keep on comfortably letting them happen.
The field of modern psychology has a wonderful technique for dealing with unwanted compulsive behaviours... Where compulsion's are literally blown out!
A compulsion is an urge, often irresistible, to behave in a particular manner... And like I already said, it is often against the individuals will... I mean, someone knows that smoking 30 a day is harmful and may want to stop... Someone might know that grabbing two huge cream cakes every day at 1pm when they walk past the bakers is unlikely to help the waistline reduce in size... Yet they carry on doing it...
Compulsions are different to habits. habits can be consciously controlled to some extent, and what's more there are many habits that are productive and useful, aren't there? Compulsions however are not within your conscious control... They are dark and sinister and happen as if by some evil force lurking deep within you... And they are all non-productive...
The process that I am offering up with this session desensitises compulsions... Ranging from biting fingernails, to smoking, eating and even obsessing about a partner or the cleanliness of your bathroom... This session enables you to comfortably let go of compulsions.. To banish them from your mind, leaving it clearer and able to use your energy for more productive and progressive aspects of your life... And that is some wonderful feeling.

 I wrote on my blog a while back about making an effort with your own personal development... I got a response from a lady who told me that effort should not be needed and that we needed inspiration... I think she wanted lightning bolts coming from the sky, which I did not think was all that practical.
Often, when I suggest to my clients that I have some continuing work for them to do outside of the face-to-face sessions together, they sigh with a sense of despair!
Often, when my students are happily staring at me teaching them, when I tell them to get into pairs to do a practical exercise, they make a sound not too dissimilar to a teenager being asked to go to bed before midnight by his parents... A sort of cross between a groan and a whine...
Why is it that people do not necessarily like stepping into action? Even if it will undoubtedly result in their own betterment?
It seems that as soon as you hand over the effort to them... Instead of me doing all the effort... That the very energy keeping them breathing and living seems to drain out of them right before your eyes. It is crazy, worse and more noticeable than when someone claims to have seen a ghost.
So to make that effort seem less like a chore, I have fun, I inject enjoyment, laughter and fun into the work I do with people... Sometimes though we all need some more energy.
Apparently, Paul McKenna is the most unread bestselling author in the UK. That is, many, many millions of people invest in his books, but never actually read them. It takes some effort to read... And then even more effort to actually understand the concepts in the book and a colossal amount more effort to then apply the strategies and techniques to yourself and your own life, doesn't it?
"Uurgh... Can't you just wave a magic wand over me and make things change without all that fuss?"
Oh come on!

 Blimey, blimey, you'd be amazed at the excuses that I am given from clients in therapy excusing their issues. of course, some are very valid and not to be ignored. Yet in therapy and in life, so many people insist on excusing themselves for all manner of behaviours, thoughts, limitations and mistakes.
Whatever it is you want to do in this lifetime, do you have a set of excuses that you offer up to yourself and others that makes it ok not to do those things? Not to live those dreams?
The word excuse does tend to give the impression of excuses being intentional and purposeful... Yet many excuses go on under our conscious minds radar... many excuses happen unconsciously. We sometimes make it ok to keep on with a limiting behaviour, or doing a negative thing, or not taking some action, or whatever else it might be.
This hypnosis session is all about blasting out and getting rid of old excuses, stopping procrastination and lots of other things besides.

 I created this programme in the month of May. In the UK, May is National Teen Self-Esteem month and I do lots of work with teenagers to help them feel better about themselves.
last time around, despite the fact that the work is aimed at teenagers, lots of the research has had me thinking on overtime.
When working with youngsters, you realise how important parents are. I think we all know that, don't we? They are often our role-models, we learn on many levels from them, they form templates for many of our own behaviours, attitudes and beliefs, without them they also influence us heavily... We all know this list could go on and on...
Some people find themselves entering adult life having suffered from inadequate parenting.... Or they tend to believe they suffered from adequate parenting.... Lots of people just do not seem to understand why or how they got stuck with parents who did not attend perfect parenting evening classes and did not actually learn how to become ultimate parents!
It is not only teens seeking to enhance their self-esteem that need hypnosis sessions like the one I am sharing with you here.
Sometimes, we need to re-parent ourselves in order to become more mature, loving, assertive, or have any other fabulous resource that we feel we could have gleaned from our parents.
Often the inadequate parenting that people have received inhibits the developmental growth so that they might get stuck at various stages of their own self-improvement and progression in life. Even if it was just perceived as bad parenting by the child, it could have a profound, unwanted effect.

 I joke about a friend of a friend who owns a mountain bike that cost him £3000.00. It is amazing, very fancy, it has so many awesome features, made of the most durable and lightweight materials, it is a work of genius. The bloke who owns it, if I am diplomatic, is rather rotund. I mean he is a chunky fella... He rides the bike out once or twice every couple of months to take his son to the park... Basically, the full capability of his mountain bike is slightly wasted on him.
It is like owning a Ferrari and keeping it in the garage, only driving it to the local shop and back once every couple of months. it is not being stretched.
At the beginning of the year I got myself a new computer system... Lots of flashing lights, it has the most amazing graphics card, and a list of features and capabilities I could bore you with, but shall not do so today... It is the same thing... It just is not going to get stretched or use to its potential by me, although it gets used plenty... it does give me some sense of security to have it running my business though. It sits a very short distance from my desk.
I love my working environment. I love my office. As well as my fabulous computer system, there are my jam packed bookcases, my phone system connecting me to the world, my antique furniture, my leather client chairs, and everything else in there.... It feels nice and I have it just how I want it these days... I am certain that you have rooms that make you feel the same way, don't you?
Sometimes in life when we move forward towards our dreams and goals, fears of the past prevent us from achieving, it is a real recurring theme here. So many people view their future through the past... Because a certain thing happened in the past, that same thing is going to happen in the future, they think... And that train of thought holds us back and can be damaging to the goals that we wish to strive toward.

 Those of you in the UK may remember an advertisement for a breakfast cereal called 'Ready Brek' - in the advertisements, if you had eaten your Ready Brek (instant hot oats) then you had a sort of orange glow around you... In the adverts, everyone would be shivering in the bus queue waiting for the bus, but the chap who ate his Ready Brek was glowing and warm with his orange glow... I used to be hypnotised by this idea as a boy!
Why am I mentioning this here?
When I was younger, I used to have a crush on the spectacularly attractive receptionist at my workplace. At that stage in my life, I had never met anyone that good looking - women like her only existed in magazines and on TV at that stage in my life! I used to try and act cool each time I walked in to work, but I often felt I was making a fool of myself!
One day, I went to a party on the 50th floor of Canary Wharf, missed my last train home and had to sleep on my friends floor, I got to work in the same clothes I wore the day before and had slept in... As I walked in the girl on reception, a part-time model and now good friend of mine, said to me "ooh Adam, you look like sh@t today!"
As I strolled into the office, I felt as if an axe had been planted in my heart... I was mortified. My self-esteem was knocked for six! I started avoiding people for the day and fully malfunctioned as a human being that day! She had meant nothing by it, but it had affected me in such a way that I was non-productive in many ways that day.
Crazy stuff, eh?
Yet, two years ago when 4 women out of an audience of 1500 that I was speaking to in Las Vegas at a conference, got up and walked out because of how they felt about my language... Well, that stuff just bounced off me... I took the positive lessons and learning's and did not let it affect me detrimentally... After all, their reaction to my language was their issue not mine.
There was a time in my life where something like that would make me want to crawl up into a ball and sob for a week!
Today though... I have 'Ready Brek Man Mode!'
Yes indeed, things I do not want to take on board an d carry around with me, I do not let pass my shield. A shield that I wear psychologically that protects me in the same way as many super-heroes...
